Dr. Cynthia King
Dr. Cynthia King is a professor in the Department of Communication Studies where she teaches courses in strategic public discourse, public speaking, rhetoric, and media studies. Dr. King’s research analyzes African American rhetorical discourses of social justice and racial resistance.
She served as the department’s chair from 2015- 2020. She is also the recipient of Furman’s 2015 Meritorious Teaching Award.
In addition to her work as a university professor, Dr. King has led numerous workshops on communication and leadership for academic, educational, business and nonprofit organizations.
She is an enthusiastic capacity builder who encourages her students, workshop participants, and individuals from all walks of life to recognize the personal power they possess and use it to build the career and life they want.
Dr. King. received her BA and MA in Communication from Auburn University and earned her Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Strategic Discourse from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a Diversity Leadership Institute graduate and Riley Center Fellow and a HERS Leadership Institute alumni. She is a 2021and 2022 Visiting Professor for the Association of National Advertisers.
Dr. King sits on the board of Jasmine Road board, a residential program for adult women survivors of human trafficking, prostitution, and addiction.
